The story follows David Aames (Tom Cruise), a wealthy and charismatic publishing magnate who lives a life of luxury in New York City. His life takes a dramatic turn after a car accident caused by a jealous former lover, Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz), leaves him severely disfigured.
