Fanaa was controversial upon release due to its portrayal of militancy, but it found immense success in India and overseas. The soundtrack by Jatin-Lal – including Chand Sifarish , Maine Dil Se Kaha , and the title track Fanaa – remains iconic. Kajol returned from a five-year break, and Aamir Khan won Filmfare awards for his performance. The Kashmir cinematography (by Ravi K. Chandran) set new standards.
