The series is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a catastrophic event known as the "Second Impact" has devastated the Earth. The story revolves around Shinji Ikari, a shy and introverted teenager who is recruited by his father, Gendo Ikari, to pilot a giant humanoid robot known as the Evangelion. Shinji's mission is to fight against monstrous creatures known as Angels, which threaten humanity's existence.
In reality, most modern fans experience a hybrid. When GKIDS and Shout! Factory released the Evangelion Ultimate Edition, they included the original ADV dub (with its original cast) for the TV series, alongside the Netflix dub for the Death(true)² and The End of Evangelion re-dubs. This acknowledges the impossible truth: there is no perfect Evangelion dub. There is only the one that first broke your heart.
Behind the scenes, Studio Khara (Hideaki Anno’s company) has become extremely controlling over Evangelion ’s international scripts. The Netflix dub was done under their strict supervision. However, when GKIDS released the theatrical Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time and eventually reissued the original series on Blu-ray, they did something miraculous: for a second new dub of the TV series (including Amanda Winn-Lee’s Rei, and with new actors for characters whose original VAs had passed away).
Better acting quality by modern standards; legally accessible on streaming.
Out of print since 2011 following ADV's bankruptcy. It is generally unavailable on streaming platforms, making it a "cult classic" version. High emotional resonance; iconic performances. Acting can feel dated; script takes liberties. 2. The Netflix/VSI Redub (2019-Present)
