Directed by Cate Shortland and written by Eric Pearson, the film began production in May 2020 and concluded in October 2020. The production took place in Norway, Iceland, and Budapest. Upon its release, "Black Widow" received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised the film's action sequences, performances (particularly Johansson and Pugh), and representation.

The highly anticipated movie was initially set to be released in May 2020 but faced several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, on July 9, 2021, Black Widow premiered simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.
