Ashok gestured to a settee. He told her how the island had changed fourteen years earlier. Boats had started arriving at odd hours; men with grainy accents and quick hands. Fishermen complained of strange lights; nets came up empty of fish. Then a storm had taken the lighthouse lamp and with it any steady rhythm. Her grandmother, Lakshmi, had wandered out shortly after, leaving behind her shawl and a smudged note: Don’t let them take the heart.

The next morning, she spoke with the islanders. There was Sunita, who ran the small grocery; Karan, a retired sailor with a wooden leg; and Mira, a schoolteacher who remembered Lakshmi's quiet walks along the western cliffs. Each offered fragments. A light seen at sea, a hum like a whale-song at night, a boat gone missing. "Things happen when the reef is meddled with," Karan said, "like the sea gets jealous."
