The film tells the story of four characters, each struggling with their own form of addiction. Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), a young heroin addict, and his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly), a fashion student struggling with her own body image issues, become entangled in a world of substance abuse. Meanwhile, Harry's mother, Sara (Ellen Burstyn), becomes dependent on diet pills, and his friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) gets caught up in the world of cocaine trafficking.
