The proliferation of fan-made modifications (“mods”) for indie games raises technical and legal questions regarding portability, dependency management, and end-user license agreements. This paper presents a case study of a hypothetical portable mod for Mirror 2: Project X (KAGAMI WORKS, 2022). We analyze the methods for decoupling mod files from the original installation directory, the use of relative paths and runtime patching, and the performance impact.
