The Eppendorf 5402, when paired with an updated manual and a strict preventative maintenance schedule, remains a capable backup or low-throughput centrifuge. However, if your lab cannot locate a verified Rev. 5 or later manual, or if the lid lock has never been retrofitted, it is time to retire the unit. Modern equivalents like the Eppendorf 5425 or 5430 R offer better energy efficiency, quieter operation, and full digital documentation.
