The Tempest is a staple of young band literature. It is often used as a "gateway" piece to introduce students to serious, programmatic music. Despite being written for very young players (often within the first year of instruction), it evokes a dark, stormy atmosphere through the use of aggressive percussion, open fifths, and dynamic contrast.
