Milo and Cassia attempt to flee the city on horses, but the pyroclastic surge (a fast-moving current of hot gas and rock) is moving too fast. Realizing they cannot outrun it, they stop. In a final moment of acceptance, they embrace and kiss each other passionately as the ash cloud consumes them.
