During the 1980s and 90s, the HIV/AIDS epidemic devastated both gay men and transgender women, particularly trans women of color. The lack of government response forced the community to build its own systems of care. ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) became a melting pot where gay men, lesbians, and trans people fought side-by-side. This crisis cemented a pragmatic alliance: survival required solidarity.
