In the vast, chaotic ecosystem of Bollywood horror, few films have managed to carve a niche as intriguing as the 2013 psychological thriller . Starring the late, great actor Irrfan Khan alongside the versatile Bipasha Basu and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the film attempted to break away from the clichéd "bargain-bin ghost" trope to deliver a nuanced story about possessive love, domestic trauma, and supernatural retribution.
Directed by Suparn Verma, Aatma tells the story of Maya (Bipasha Basu), a single mother trying to protect her young daughter from the ghost of her deceased, abusive husband, Abhay (Irrfan Khan). Unlike typical Bollywood horror where ghosts throw vases and scream, Abhay’s ghost is chillingly intelligent. He doesn't want to kill his family; he wants to possess them.
